DFW/ABJ President, Cheryl Smith in the the News
Cheryl Smith, Host of KKDA's Reporters Roundtable
By Michelle London Bell, Dallas South News
Cheryl Smith, Host of KKDA's Reporter's Roundtable
Cheryl Smith has shared her insight and expertise on the world of journalism to local students during an 8-week crash course held on Saturdays at Lincoln High School. The veteran journalist and radio talk show host also brought in heavyweights across radio, television, and print mediums to speak to the students during the Urban Journalism Workshop. Guests talked about their experiences in their careers and broke down the realities of a career in journalism or communications.
The first session on March 5th provided a brief overview of the “boot camp” for students, and allowed for introductions to prominent members of the DFW Association of Black Journalists. After a brief hiatus for both Spring Break and the special event with Dr. Ian Smith at Kiest Park on March 12, the workshop returned full throttle with “Radio Day” – where students learned voice preparation techniques, how to write for radio and how to audition for broadcasts. Special guest James Washington, Publisher of the Dallas Weekly, dropped by during lunch to explain the importance of branding yourself and more. Students were also assigned mentors to conduct practice interviews and write story leads as assignments.
On April 2, “Radio Day II” – 97.9 The Beat’s Gary with the Tea stopped by to tell his story about how he got his start in radio nearly twenty years ago. Ms. Smith then coached the students on the importance of staying abreast of current events, and how to utilize the internet as a vital tool for both research and building a network.
For the weekend of April 9, the focus was on television — providing a thorough and comprehensive overview on jobs in television both behind and in-front of the camera. The students were tasked to craft a potential on-air persona and trained on newscast audition techniques. Steve Pickett, of KTVT Channel 11/KTXA Channel 21 and Independent producer LaDonna Castro stopped by the workshop to discuss their positions and understanding of the broadcast industry, as well as examples of their work and what is considered to be “a good story.” “This workshop has reinforced what I want to study at the University of North Texas to pursue a career in journalism and given me a lot of confidence to succeed” says Asjha Cooper, a high school student from Denton.
The remaining weeks of the journalism workshop covered everything from social media to public relations, and the integration of marketing and communications with the media. Media gurus Kayla Adams, PR Director for TD Jakes Ministries and the Potter’s House and Deanna McKinley of Frito-Lay Inc. dropped by on April 30to give the students a glimpse of “a day in the life” of PR professional. DFW/ABJ wanted to ensure that the students were provided a well-rounded view of potential career paths and opportunities.
The Closing Ceremony for the Class of 2011 will be on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at 3:00pm at Lincoln High School.

4. What icon died this past week...with family members upholding their wish of being late to their own funeral?
5. What NCAA team upset the Duke Blue Devils?
6. What is the name of the fund that school districts in Texas hope the state would tap into to aid in the education budget crisis?
7. Police audio tapes were released this week with conversations of what Dallas elected official, despite attempts to keep them concealed?
8. The military offensive taking place in Libya is known as Operation what? 9. AT&T recently announced the purchase of what wireless carrier?
10. What did a judge rule in the case of a former beauty queen's attempt to get her crown back?
***Bonus***In what city in Texas did this controversy occur? Thanks Eva! I was feeling generous so I gave 25 points for the bonus question! AND I can't wait to hear Selwyn Crawford's answers!!!
To lighten things up students talked about efforts to reach their mentors. While Rasheeda Smith made it to her interview with Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price; Terina Smith arrived very late to her interview with Deanna McKinley of Frito Lay. No excuse!!! Katty Smith (no I don't have all of my relatives in the program!!!) said she couldn't reach Steve Pickett of CBS 11. Well Steve is always on point and although he has a newborn baby he is still committed and he had already emailed me telling me to give Katty his cell phone number. SHE WAS SHOCKED! Asjha Cooper did make her interview with Dallas Cowboy Bradie James. This particular exercise was becoming more and more embarrassing as it became apparent that some people used their entire break as a vacation. I can't wait until Steve shows up at the workshop because he will be there!
So we moved on to identifying and writing leads. I also gave my lecture about appropriate emails. No! [email protected] is not acceptable!!! So we had a few changes to make. Sure they can keep their other email addresses but as Terry Allen added-- "Bootylicious" is not an email address you want to have on your resume! Then it was time the session on blogging, tweeting and social media networking. Dana Polk (former president of the Prairie View A&M NABJ Chapter) and veteran journalist Judith Howard Ellis took over. Following their very informative session Dallas Weekly Publisher James Washington was the luncheon speaker and he talked to the students about "branding." It's important to think about how you can add "Inc" to the end of your name.
UJW alum Trina Terrell also stopped by. Trina is former NABJ student rep and she won almost $20K as a participant in the workshop and our scholarship program. The students were shocked to hear that she was in the program 20 years ago because she "looks about 23!" I told them about how working with the wonderful Lawrence Young Trina had front page stories in the Dallas Weekly and the Dallas Morning News before she graduated from high school. After lunch it was time for a budget meeting and we discussed the use of pictures to help tell a story/provide another voice. We talked about the op/ed pages of their newspaper and the group decided to do a point/counterpoint column about tattoos. They spent about 30 minutes researching the topic, looking for experts who have spoken on the subject, searching for stats and finding pictures to add depth to their messages. After discussing their information they began writing. I learned a lot as they did their research and I can only conclude that people do the strangest things and in even stranger places! We need to bring some columnists in for the next Lab to assist with writing exercises.
Next week is RADIO DAY and we're calling on our radio folks to come on out.
Thanks to Terry Allen for making the lunch pickup and Judy Howard Ellis for making a $50 donation! And Dr. Louie White was on the premises bright and early to ensure that we were able to access the facility.

A final note-- Services for Adrian Drake were held this Saturday at Friendship-West Baptist Church. Adrian was one of my interns for the Dallas Weekly back in 1990. I even took him and others on a road trip to experience Homecoming at Florida A&M. He loved radio and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Upon graduation from Paul Quinn College, he held many positions including hosting a show on KRNB (one of two sister stations to KKDA-AM) and I was notorious for finishing my show and stopping over to share the microphone with Adrian and the Love Doctor--Rev. Sheron Patterson. It was a joy witnessing his spiritual growth. Unfortunately I did not learn of his passing until I was leaving the radio station this morning.

DFWABJ's UJW: Week 1 and 2.
This is the 22nd Class of the DFW/ABJ Urban Journalism Workshop. It was then-Dallas Morning News editor Rochelle Riley who brought the idea to the chapter and we have had a lot of success over the years and an impressive list of alumni. Over the course of the past two weeks we have had 20 students.
Here is what happened during Weeks 1 and 2:
Day 1 -- DFW/ABJ Urban Journalism Workshop
Several of the parents stayed for a while to hear what would be going on for the next two months.
During the orientation segment the students learned about protocol and how to properly address others and introduce themselves. They also learned about note-taking and practiced interviewing one another.
Next several members of DFW/ABJ visited with students and shared information about their jobs:
Chris Howell - KCBI Radio
LaDonna Castro – LaDoMedia International
J. Young Gilliam - Irving TV Network
Kayla Adams – Potter’s House/T.D. Jakes Ministry
Michelle London-Bell -- Dallas South News
Giselle Phelps – CW 33 TV
Denise Stovall -- United Methodist Reporter
Also workshop alum, LaKesha Oliver, discussed her workshop experience.
While the students ate lunch, DFW/ABJ members attended the DFW/ABJ general meeting.
Next the students visited with DFW/ABJ Vice President Eva Coleman. Mrs. Coleman talked to the students about her career in radio and television.
The students ended the day by completing their peer profiles.
Week 2 - There were three surprises for the students:
1. There would not be a current events quiz. BUT we did discuss current events and it was a pleasant surprise to see how informed many of the students were. So that means that next session there WILL be a quiz!
2. There will not be a session next week to allow students to enjoy their Spring Break --after they finish their assignments.
3. We were going on a field trip to work on our Healthy NABJ Project by participating in the Make Over Mile with Dr. Ian Smith.
In preparation for our field trip, we got on our computers and researched information about Dr. Ian and prepared questions for the interviews. Thanks to Brenda Epperson and Tracy Thomas, we were able to transport all of the students to Kiest Park where they picked up their Makeover Mile tee shirts. Next they walked one mile, with Dr. Ian, to the neighborhood CVS store where health screenings were taking place. Students interviewed Dr. Ian and celebrity guest--Spinderella.
Once we arrived back at the school, the students ate lunch. Our afternoon discussion focused on preparing for job interviews, appropriate attire for interviewing and working, and preparing a resume and cover letter. Students were given a sample job application to complete and return for their mock job interviews in the future.
Next editors were selected for the newspaper and mentors were assigned. Each student received two mentors that they are to contact, meet and interview to write profiles on. We discussed the significance of mentors and building relationships. As the day came to a close we gathered around and sang a song. Today was Annya Smith’s 16th birthday so we had cake and ice cream.
Next session - Saturday, March 26, 9:00a.m. SHARP.
Assignments due: Peer Profiles
Makeover Mile lede
Completed Workshop Application and essay
Mentor update
