DFW/ABJ WAS FOUNDED MARCH 1, 1981. BLACK PROFESSIONALS FROM AREA NEWSPAPERS, RADIO AND TELEVISION STATIONS, PUBLIC RELATIONS AND ADVERTISING FIRMS, THOSE IN MEDIA ORGANIZATIONS INVOLVED IN THE DISSEMINATION OF NEWS AS WELL AS FREELANCE JOURNALISTS ALONG WITH SPECIALLY RECOGNIZED NON-JOURNALISTS (HONORARY MEMBERS) & MEDIA RELATED PROFESSIONALS CONSTITUTE OUR MEMBERSHIP.
THE PURPOSE OF THE DFW/ABJ SHALL BE TO BRING ABOUT A UNION OF BLACK JOURNALISTS DEDICATED TO TRUTH AND EXCELLENCE IN THE NEWS AND FULL EQUALITY IN THE INDUSTRY IN ORDER TO:

- STRENGTHEN TIES AMONG BLACK JOURNALISTS IN THE DALLAS-FORT WORTH MEDIA.
- IDENTIFY, SUPPORT, EMPOWER BLACKS IN THE JOURNALISM INDUSTRY WHO ARE IN THE DALLAS-FORT WORTH MEDIA.
- SENSITIZE THE MEDIA TO INSTITUTIONAL RACISM IN ITS COVERAGE AND EMPLOYMENT PRACTICES BY MONITORING EXISTING EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY AND FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION LAWS AND WORKING TO SEEK COMPLIANCE WHERE NECESSARY.
- CRITIQUE THE MEDIA’S PORTRAYAL OF BLACK PEOPLE AND LEND COLLABORATIVE EXPERTISE TO SUPPORT MEDIA DIVERSITY
- EXPAND MEDIA’S COVERAGE OF BLACKS AND ENCOURAGE BALANCED REPORTING. BECOME AN EXEMPLARY GROUP OF PROFESSIONALS HONORING EXCELLENCE AND OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS OF BLACK JOURNALISTS.
- WORK TO INCREASE AND INFLUENCE THE GROWTH OF BLACK JOURNALISTS AND MEDIA RELATED PROFESSIONALS IN MANAGERIAL AND SUPERVISORY POSITIONS.
- INCREASE NUMBER OF BLACKS IN THE MEDIA THROUGH ORGANIZATIONAL ADVOCACY, PLACEMENT REFERRAL AND/OR OUTREACH METHODS
- AWARD SCHOLARSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS OF COLOR STUDYING JOURNALISM AND MEDIA -RELATED PROFESSIONS.
- ENCOURAGE JOURNALISM SCHOOLS TO APPOINT BLACK EDUCATORS AND ADMINISTRATORS
- SPONSOR & DEVELOP ACTIVITIES TO HELP MEMBERS ENHANCE THEIR PERFORMANCE AND EFFECTIVENESS.
- EXCHANGE INFORMATION AND IDEAS WITH PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS CONCERNED ABOUT MINORITIES IN THE MEDIA
- EDUCATE BLACK COMMUNITIES ON MEDIA ACCESS AND THEIR CONSUMER RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES.
- SPONSOR AND CREATE PARTNERSHIP WITH PROJECTS THAT PROMOTE POSITIVE ASPECTS OF THE BLACK COMMUNITIES.
- MONITOR LOCAL NEWS COVERAGE OF BLACK ISSUES AND CHALLENGE UNBALANCED COVERAGE.
